Who Will Rock the Cradle?

One in every three infants who are enrolled in
daycare centers today…drop out within three weeks to a month…
Where do they go? Usually to a grandmother, an aunt, a sister (etc.)…
(This dropout rate plus the many ads for daycare alternatives) …is
all too frequently misinterpreted to mean that there is an insufficient
supply of adequate “professional” daycare available. That is simply not
true.
Why do these families with their babies and young children leave daycare
facilities? The answer is often illness coupled very directly with
economics.
One of the biggest battles the daycare center fights is illness and the
spread of bacteria and viruses. No matter how careful the center may be,
disease is unavoidable.
What are the parental alternatives (when children get sick)? Parents, where
two are present, take turns at taking their sick days. When these are
exhausted, time is taken off the job without pay. Mothers have been known to
lose their jobs because of taking too much time off, usually spent nursing
unwell children.
The private setting, therefore, presents an increasingly inviting
alternative because of the minimal exposure to illness and the maximizing of
on-the-job time. However…(these “in home” daycares are not monitored.)

What price does an employed professional
mother pay? What price are the offspring make to pay? What price is society
paying with its most valuable resource, our children? Is the quality that we
speak about, and say we prize so highly, really there—or are we just giving
lip service to our nation’s children?
As yet, we do not know what a generation of children totally raised in
daycare will bring to our society.

No matter how hard we may
strive, quality will never be found in a daycare center
