Warehousing Children
by Ilana Mercer,
www.ilanamercer.com,
17-Aug-2001 |
The plight of middle class North
Americans waiting in line to warehouse their children in day care centers
makes the heart bleed - for the children, of course.
...as soon as they conceive, these couples are impelled to rush out and
place their unsuspecting embryos on daycare waiting lists for fear there
will be no placements when the time is ripe to kick the neonate*
into the harsh world.

I am no longer a young mother, but I still recall
the day I learned my pride and joy had been conceived.
Call it a personality flaw if you will, but I was unable to deposit this
personage of my creation to the custody of strangers (in a daycare).

Warehousing Children

(Here is) the ordeal of the warehoused child. For
her, it is up with daylight (or before that in winter), gulp down a hurried
breakfast, get shoved in the car, and then ejected at school or nursery
school. Then it's get picked up and dropped off at daycare, only to be
fetched in the evening by a weary and distracted parent. Children that
young cannot cope with such a schedule without forfeiting some of their
centeredness, peace of mind, and rightful childhood.

Doubtless, if
children had a say
(about daycare), they would want more of their parents and less parenting
by proxy.

"It Takes A Mom
vs. Day Care",'The Voice' Online, www.afwuf.org, Fall
2001 |
There is...a direct correlation between
time spent in day care and a child's aggression, defiance and disobedience.
...Most teachers, if they were honest, would tell you exactly the same thing
from personal experience in the classroom.

Many of my readers who are stay-at-home
moms will have been confronted and made to feel guilty with the argument
that they are robbing their children of an opportunity to socialize with
other children by not sending them to pre-school or daycare.
The 'daycare as
a way to teach children socialization' argument turns out to be bogus.
(On
the contrary), NFFRE* found that daycare has a negative effect on the intellectual and social-emotional functioning
of children.
