Mothers Provide Best Care says New Study,
Contact: Denise Kanter
Morningstar Educational Network
10-Oct-05 |
Research
has shown that the outcomes are undesirable when children spend too much
time in day care. Unfortunately, as Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, senior fellow of
the Beverly LaHaye Institute reports, the negative findings of the
comprehensive [daycare] studies are buried in the small print while the
headlines trumpet messages that make parents feel OK about putting their
children in full-time day care." In another study prepared by the,
"Southwest Policy Institute concluded, "Contrary to common belief, early
institutional schooling can harm children emotionally, intellectually and
socially."

No place like home for kids
by Lydia Lovric, The Winnipeg Sun, 17-Oct-05 |
In what's being described as the "most
in-depth study of the subject to date," British researchers conclude...kids
placed in daycare fared worst when it came to developmental tests.
Many...(claim) daycare is good for kids because it provides them with plenty
of social interaction. According to this study, that just isn't the case.
Some...insist daycare gives children
more confidence. Nice theory, but the research just doesn't back it up.

No place like home for kids
by Lydia Lovric, The Winnipeg Sun, 17-Oct-05 |
A recent study out of Cambridge
University shows the stress levels of toddlers soar when they first begin
daycare. Daycare kids suffer great anxiety and their stress levels remain
high five months later, despite the fact they may outwardly appear more
settled.
Do these sound like happy kids to you?

No place like home for kids
by Lydia Lovric, The Winnipeg Sun, 17-Oct-05 |
Bottom line: Full-time daycare should be
a last resort.
That said, do we really want more tax money poured into a national daycare
program when it's clear daycare is far from the best option for most kids?
Instead, the government pretends to be
doing something wonderful for Canada's children by making daycare more
accessible. Either the (Politicians) are stupid and fail to comprehend the
scientific studies regarding child care, or they're greedy and want as much
income tax money as possible even if it comes at the expense of a child's
well-being.

3 New Studies Assess Effects of Child Care
by Tamar Lewin, The New York Times, 1-Nov-05 |
"The Influence of Preschool Centers on
Children's Development Nationwide: How Much Is Too Much? ...by sociologists
at Stanford and the University of California...found that on average, the
earlier a child enters center-based care, the slower the pace of social
development. The greatest effect was among high-income children. Youngsters
who were from families with income of at least $66,000 and who spent more
than 30 hours a week in center-based care had the weakest social skills -
including diminished levels of cooperation, sharing and motivated engagement
in classroom tasks, along with greater aggression - compared with similar
children who remained at home with a parent.

Loeb's study on preschool finds bright side,
dark side by Carrie Sturrock, San Francisco Chronicle,
1-Nov-05 |
The UC Berkeley-Stanford study found
that all children who attended preschool at least 15 hours a week displayed
more negative social behaviors such as trouble cooperating or acting up,
when compared with their peers. The discrepancies were most pronounced among
children from higher-income families.
It's not clear why children from higher-income families exhibit more
negative behaviors than their stay-at-home peers.
Other studies have found childcare centers negatively affect children's
social development, said Jay Belsky, director of the Institute for the Study
of Children, Families and Social Issues at Birkbeck University of London, in
an e-mail interview.
"It is time to come to grips with what all too many have denied for all too
long, namely, that all disconcerting news about adverse effects cannot be
attributed to low-quality care, which has been more or less the mantra of
the field of child development and the child-care advocacy community for
decades," Belsky said.
